Israeli Expertise in Ritual Helps Africa Combat AIDS

From Israeli Expertise in Ritual Helps Africa Combat AIDS:
Inon Schenker, an AIDS prevention specialist, is director of Operation Abraham, a project launched last year that dispatched Israeli surgeons to teach circumcision in Africa.

Studies conducted between 2004 and 2006 in South Africa, Uganda and Kenya found that the risk of contracting AIDS in heterosexual sex is 50-60% less among men who are circumcised.

Because it is obligatory under Jewish law, male circumcision is nearly universal in Israel.

With the support of the Hadassah Medical Organization, the Jerusalem AIDS Project sent three delegations of surgeons to teach adult circumcision in Swaziland, the southern African nation with the highest prevalence of AIDS in the world.

The Israeli teams included an Israeli Arab doctor with experience in Muslim ritual circumcision.
There is another types of Muslim ritual circumcision called female genital mutilation (FGM).

Israelis Contributed to Daring Colombian Hostage Rescue

Contrary to what you've been spoonfed by the Jew-hating Arab-loving left, every single time something good is done, whether it is a doctor saving a child's life, or a ravaged town needing its citizens rescued from a disaster, you can pretty much count on the fact that Israel was involved in the attempts to save a life. From Israelis Contributed to Daring Colombian Hostage Rescue:

Former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, who was released after six years in captivity on Wednesday, compared her "impeccable" rescue operation to Israeli commando operations and Israel indeed contributed to the daring rescue mission. The Israelis involved in the operation feel it is important to accord the credit to Colombia.

"It's a Colombian Entebbe operation," former IDF General Staff operations chief Brig.-Gen. (res.) Israel Ziv said Thursday. A year and a half ago, Colombia asked Israel for help in its struggle against FARC, which had become a militia specializing in kidnapping civilians and military figures for ransom.

The Israeli activity, involving dozens of security experts, was coordinated by Global CST, owned by Ziv and Brig.-Gen. (res.) Yosef Kuperwasser, former head of IDF Military Intelligence's research division.

A company source said, "We helped them prepare themselves to fight terror. We helped them to plan operations and strategies and develop intelligence sources."

Israelis also provided equipment and intelligence technology.

Another reason why murderous palestinian thugs should always sleep with one eye opened.

CIA Confirms in Video: Israel Bombed Nuclear Reactor in Syria

Once again Israel does the job America won't do. The entire civilized world can once again thank Israel for preventing another Muslim dictatorship theocracy from using nuclear weapons against infidels.

Later today U.S. intelligence officials will show members of Congress a videotape and other evidence supporting their case that Syria was building a nuclear reactor with North Korean assistance before it was bombed by Israeli planes in September 2007, a U.S. official said Wednesday.

Intelligence officials who have seen the evidence consider it "extremely compelling," the anonymous U.S. official said. He said it was gleaned from a variety of sources, not just Israeli intelligence.

U.S. officials said Israel shared intelligence with the United States before the bombing after administration officials expressed doubts that the site was a nuclear reactor built with North Korea's assistance.

The Syrian reactor was similar in design to a North Korean reactor that has in the past produced small amounts of plutonium, the official said. It was not yet complete but was far enough along to demonstrate a resemblance to the North Korean reactor at Yonbyon.

Shortly after the Israel attack, Syria bulldozed the area and constructed a new building there, which it has not allowed foreign visitors to enter.

Syria did not declare the apparent reactor to the International Atomic Energy Agency nor was it under international safeguards, possibly putting Syria in breech of an international nuclear nonproliferation treaty.

The irony in this is that there is a Congressional subcommittee session to deal with Syrian-North Korean relations, amidst reports that a possible deal is in the works to remove North Korea from the American list of of state sponsors of terrorism. The video being released later today should blow that idea out of the water, that is, if there are any Americans left in Congress that have any guts.

An Unlikely Refuge: Muslims Fleeing Darfur Rebuilding Lives in Israel

If Israel is such a horrible country, tell me why Muslims are seeking refuge there. From An Unlikely Refuge: Muslims Fleeing Darfur Rebuilding Lives in Israel:
"Even though we're Muslim, the Islamic world has done nothing to protect us," said Yassin, one of the first Darfurians to make it into Israel across the border from Egypt and now director of Bnei Darfur [Sons of Darfur], which assists Sudanese refugees to integrate into Israeli society. "All of the Arab countries support the government of Sudan - our problem is with the Arab League," he said. As far as Yassin is concerned, Israel has provided for his people in a way that no Arab country would - and for that he's eternally grateful.

Palestinian Preemies Safe in Ashkelon Hospital Bomb Shelter

Unlike Israeli hospitals, I doubt that a Muslim hospital would try to save Jewish babies. From IMRA via Daily Alert:
Last week, a Palestinian woman from Beit Lahia gave birth to premature twins, weighing less than 1.5 kgs. each, at the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon. After Hamas began raining down Katyusha rockets on Ashkelon on Saturday, including one that fell a mere 50 meters from the hospital entrance, all the premature babies, including the two Palestinian babies, were transferred to the hospital's bomb shelter for fear that the hospital itself would receive a direct missile hit.

Israel to Send Animal Vaccine to Gaza after Border Breach

From Israel to Send Animal Vaccine to Gaza after Border Breach via Daily Alert:
Israel will deliver thousands of doses of vaccine for cattle and avian-borne diseases to Gaza. Gazans have brought in large numbers of camels, sheep, cows and chickens. Israeli authorities fear that with the new influx of livestock will come a wave of diseases not indigenous to Gaza, among them foot-and-mouth disease and avian flu that are known to exist in Egypt. Because of the proximity between Gaza and Israel, the diseases could easily spread into Israel.

Israeli researchers make breakthrough on cause of colon cancer

Via JPost:
A single variation on chromosome No. 8 may account for a significant proportion of colon cancer cases, according to a study by researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan.

The research, involving thousands of Israeli Jews and Arabs, has provided important new information on the genes that make a person more likely to develop this deadly cancer.

For a paper just published on-line in Cancer Biology and Therapy, the researchers worked as part of the the Molecular Epidemiology of Colorectal Cancer project, a Michigan-Israel collaboration that has searched for clues to colon cancer's genetic roots for 10 years using samples from large numbers of Israelis correlated with their ancestry. The project is funded by the National Cancer Institute, with additional funding from the Irving Weinstein Foundation.

The link was found by detailed comparisons of genetic material from thousands of colon cancer patients and healthy individuals, and by evaluating the incidence of colon cancer among the immediate family members of colon cancer patients.

People who carry a specific genetic marker (variation) - called the C allele of rs10505477 - were found to be 23 percent more likely to have colon cancer than individuals without the marker. The researchers estimate that this single genetic variation might account for 14% of colorectal cancer cases in Israel, where colon cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths.

Three other research teams have just reported similar findings in the journal Nature Genetics, having simultaneously found their way to the same small area of chromosome 8 - called 8q24 - in the search for colon cancer genetic links. The fact that these studies were performed among other populations suggests that this genetic marker is highly influential across ethnic groups.

The researchers compared the genetic makeup and family history of more than 1,800 colorectal cancer patients with that of 1,900 healthy people with the same breakdown of age, gender and ethnicity - either Ashkenazi Jews, Sephardi Jews or Arab/non-Jew. Samples of tumor tissue from many cancer patients were also tested.

The genetic link between the marker and colon cancer was especially strong among patients diagnosed with colon cancer before they were 50 years old.

Prof. Gad Rennert, the head of Israel's Cancer Registry and a physician at Carmel Medical Center and Technion's Medical School, said "the study of populations in Israel has been shown exceptionally fruitful in contributing to knowledge about the genetics of leading cancers. This is due to the unique characteristics of the population and our ability to study it in a representative manner."

Unraveling the mysteries of the susceptibility to disease is moving rapidly since the publication of the complete sequence of the human genome in 2003.

Dr. Stephen Gruber, the co-leader of the Michigan-Israeli team and first author of the new paper, added: "The mystery of the relationship between our genetic code and disease is now starting to become clear, and many scientists are turning to the same chapter to find important clues to colorectal cancer."

He and his colleagues plan to continue their effort to zero in on the genetic variations involved in cancer. Gruber said the new finding was particularly interesting when considered alongside recent discoveries in the genetics of prostate cancer and breast cancer.

"The same genetic region that predisposes to colon cancer has also recently been shown to be an important region predisposing to breast cancer and prostate cancer," said Gruber, who is an associate professor of internal medicine and of human genetics in the University of Michigan Medical School and of epidemiology in the university's School of Public Health. He also directs the cancer genetics program in the school's Comprehensive Cancer Center, which focuses on inherited cancer risks.

"The specific genetic cause for this joint susceptibility to three different cancers has not yet been discovered, but several groups are working to close in on the mechanism that might cause it," he said.

While there is not yet a screening test for the genetic variation that was pinpointed in the study, Gruber and his co-authors emphasize that genetic testing is available for other genetic variations linked to colorectal cancer. People with a strong family history of colon cancer, especially cases that began when relatives were younger than age 50, should get genetic counseling and have colonoscopies or other screening tests before they themselves turn 50.

Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in Israel and the US; the good news is that it is largely preventable with early screening, said Gruber. Although most cancers are not "inherited," some families are particularly susceptible and may benefit from early detection or other risk reduction strategies.

Genetic counseling and screening can already help to identify two common conditions associated with familial colon cancer risk - familial adenomatous polyposis and Lynch Syndrome, which usually causes cancer to develop either in the colon or the uterus.
