A new study on Louise Arbour's performance as UN rights chief gives her mixed reviews on confronting violators, and urges her replacement, Navanethem Pillay, to adopt a stronger approach toward UN heavyweights such as China, Russia and Egypt. The Right to Name and Shame, a 48-page report by UN Watch, a human rights NGO in Geneva that monitors the United Nations, was presented today at the inaugural meeting of the UN Human Rights Council's expert advisors. The report is the first to scrutinize the tenure of a UN high commissioner for human rights. Click Here for Full Report: "The Right to Name and Shame"
On the Arab-Israel conflict, while Arbour’s approach could not be compared to that of the Arab-dominated Human Rights Council, whose resolutions have justified Hamas and Hezbollah terrorism, her statements were disproportionately weighted against Israel. Arbour rarely if ever criticized Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria or other countries in the Middle East with highly problematic records.

Stop Funding Demonizing NGOs
For many years, Israel has been attacked by non-government organizations (NGOs) that invent (or distort) the terms of international law, falsify facts, and violate the universality of human rights. Some of the NGOs promoting the demonization campaigns get more than half their annual budgets from European governments. Additional funds come from the Ford Foundation. Israeli officials should make the case for a halt in this funding of demonization in every discussion with European ambassadors, heads of state and foreign ministers.

Gillerman to UN: Israel Will Defend Itself
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Dan Gillerman, launched a formal complaint to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council over the Palestinian mortar shell barrage that killed Amnon Rosenberg. "Excellency, the killing of an Israeli civilian this morning and the attack on Nahal Oz yesterday underscore the malicious and murderous intentions of Hamas. It is a terrorist organization that has no compassion or concern for civilians, neither Israeli nor Palestinian. Hamas' commitment to violence and disregard for the Palestinian people are reminders that it has no interest in peace nor is it suited for engagement with the international community," wrote Gillerman.
"Israel will not stand idly by as its citizens are subjected to indiscriminate and lethal rocket attacks. Israel will defend itself, as any other nation would, in accordance with its inherent right under article 51 of the United Nations Charter."

UN Targets World Union for Progressive Judaism
More than 3,000 non-governmental organizations, or NGOs, are officially accredited by the UN, entitling these groups to enter UN premises, get access to meetings and decision-makers, and speak at UN bodies like the Human Rights Council. However, on Tuesday, the UN Committee on Non-governmental Organizations is poised to revoke these basic access rights from the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ), which represents more than 1.7 million reform, progressive, liberal and reconstructionist Jews all over the world. The WUPJ offers a rare but tenacious voice that confronts Islamic human rights abuses at the UN at every turn.
Bureaucrats at the UN trace the problem back to a Jan. 24, 2008, session of the Human Rights Council. As the council conducted its predetermined witch hunt against Israel, WUPJ representative David Littman referred to Hamas' genocidal charter. He began three times, quoting the charter's words that "Israel will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it," and calling upon the council to invoke the Genocide Convention.
Each time, the council president interrupted and warned him to "focus on the issue." Littman stood his ground: "The issue is what Hamas and the government in Gaza wishes to do to Israel." Bang, bang, bang went the gavel. Stymied, Littman recalled his Shakespeare and said: "There is a general malaise in the air. A feeling that something is rotten in the state of this council." Those words were "disrespectful" to the Human Rights Council, the diplomats from the Muslim world declared.

Amnesty in 2007: Attacking Democracy instead of Oppression in Middle East
Summary: NGO Monitor has systematically analyzed Amnesty International’s Middle East coverage in 2007, applying a quantitative methodology, similar to that used to examine the agenda of Human Rights Watch.Click here to read the complete report.
The results show that in 2007 Amnesty singled out Israel for more condemnation than Syria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Lebanon, and Algeria.
More items were published condemning Israel, than the Palestinian Authority, Hamas and Hezbollah combined. If detailed reports are used as an indicator, Amnesty ranks Israel and Iraq as equally the worst human rights abusers in the Middle East.
Israel’s democratic and open society ironically invites disproportionately negative reporting from Amnesty International. Access to information facilitates more comprehensive research than in less democratic regimes; democracy demands higher standards of human rights, according to Amnesty International’s Israel branch; external factors, such as media attention, dictate AI’s policy.
Amnesty's 2008 annual report (covering events in 2007) is yet another example of the NGO's highly biased approach. It presents a gross distortion of the conflict, selectively reports events to remove the context of terrorism and ignore human rights issues not related to its political agenda, while repeating un-sourced and anecdotal claims.
The Israeli Justice Ministry's response to Amnesty's June 2007 report, "Enduring occupation Palestinians under siege in the West Bank” stated that “Amnesty’s report is one-sided, immoral, and riddled with mistakes and numerous factual and legal inaccuracies, including scant mention of Palestinian terrorism."

Hamas Seizing Half of All Fuel Sent to Gaza, Creating False Gas Crisis
Hamas seizes half the fuel Israel sends to Gaza and uses it in part for its military vehicles, Israeli and PA officials said Thursday. Hussein al-Sheikh, a PA official, said Hamas seizes 400,000 of the 800,000 liters of diesel fuel transferred to Gaza weekly and intended for uses such as generators, hospitals, water pumps and sewage pumps. Israeli sources said Hamas was preventing gasoline from reaching Gaza gas stations. "Hamas is trying to create a false fuel crisis in Gaza," a senior government source said. "The simulated strike by Gaza's gas station owners is also organized by Hamas. They want to create long lines for gas and a feeling that Israel is tightening the siege on Gaza, although this is not the case," he said. In addition, Hamas is trying to create the impression of a food shortage, although food supplies were sufficient.

Legless Jewish Chicks Preventing Hot Arab Chicks from Getting Any
The article highlights the (sniff-sniff) poor Arab, Sherifa Shawara, who wants to get married. The second-year college student doesn’t lack for suitors. The problem is where she lives. Although Shawara lives within the Israeli-drawn boundaries of Jerusalem, she holds a West Bank ID and could be arrested if she’s caught inside the city but outside her village.
“I can’t move. I can’t go anywhere,” says Shawara, locking her arms across her chest and gazing bitterly into the distance. “Last week, the soldiers told me my name wasn’t on the list and I couldn’t go home. Recently, we went shopping and bought a lot, and the soldier wouldn’t even let us enter the village in a taxi, so we had to carry it all on foot.”Ms. Gorin writes:
Poor Shawara. I’m sure Rivka (an Israeli everygirl composite) feels her pain. Because Rivka is having a hard time too. You see, Rivka falls out of her bed every morning as she tries to start her day, because she keeps forgetting that she’s missing her legs. “I can’t move. I can’t go anywhere,” Rivka might say. What’s more, apparently not too many guys are into amputee chicks, so Rivka can really identify with Shawara. Of course, Rivka has permission to move around, she just can’t.
So my question to Shawara is: would you like to trade places with Rivka? Or maybe you’d rather be Kinneret Boosany, sixty percent of whose body is burned (including most of her face), thanks to a suicide bomber she was serving coffee to?
Tell us, Monitor — who would you trade places with — Shawara or Kinneret?
Thought so.
But hey, what’s a few thousand more Jewish lives and limbs so that hot Arab chicks can get laid?
Right, Georgie?

I must be doing something right
Yesterday, the politically depraved Daily Kos linked here and called this site a right-wing swampland.
Today, the politically depraved Israel-bashing site PhilipWeiss [dot] org, edited by Philip Weiss who himself is a Jew, commanded his readers to praise anti Israel writers, like the Israel-bashing journalist Scott Wilson, who was dissected in my post here. Weiss calls Wilson "noble".
Jews who loathe themselves are deficient. Deficient Jews actually enjoy embracing palestinian arabs and other unevolved cultural groups because it makes them feel better about themselves. Why any human being - a Jew especially - could proclaim his support for an Islamic movement whose goal is to annihilate all the world's Jews, is hard to answer. It's shocking to the normal observer, this behavior, that a Jew could take such an anti-Israeli anti-Jewish position. That a Jew like Weiss would, seems all the more astounding - and attention-grabbing.
Philip Weiss says this about himself:
"I know that some Jewish readers will say, [I] care about the opinions of a Palestinian graduate student and an Irish atheist more than [I] do the opinion of [my] coreligionists. They are right."Why are we right, Weiss? Why does Philip Weiss frame himself as a "progressive"? Why doesn't he just wear Elect Palestinian Arabs for President buttons? He should just be honest.
The substance of what Philip Weiss has to say - the conduct of Jews who despise their own people - spans the full spectrum of political depravity.
Paul Bogdanor says that:
There are anti-Zionist Jews who peddle vicious libels about Israel. There are anti-Zionist Jews who compare the Jewish state with Nazi Germany. There are anti-Zionist Jews who support the PLO, Hamas or Hizbullah. There are anti-Zionist Jews who collaborate with anti-Semites and Holocaust deniers. There are anti-Zionist Jews who defend suicide bombings, anti-Zionist Jews who support the destruction of Israel, and – incredibly – there are even anti-Zionist Jews who advocate measures against other Jews that could plausibly be described as genocidal.Deficient Jews have no self-respect. They are merely self-elected policeman, telling the rest of the world that "Islamic fundamentalism" is a reaction to various factors. Yet before all those factors existed, jihad terror existed. But of course, Weiss and his minions have no idea of that.
It must be noted, with all due caution, that some anti-Zionists appear to harbor genocidal intentions toward their fellow Jews.
Decades ago Arie Bober, leader of the Israeli communist Matzpen party, boasted of his support for an "Arab revolution" that would either split the Jewish workers from Zionism or slaughter three million Israelis in "another Holocaust."
Today we can detect similar ideas in the writings of Norman Finkelstein, who has invoked the destruction of Japanese cities in World War II as precedent for holding the Israeli people "accountable for the crimes of the Israeli state"; he also regards hundreds of thousands of Israeli settlers, including pregnant women and helpless invalids, as "legitimate targets for armed resistance."
Competing in his genocidal frenzy was the Israeli leftist Yigal Tumarkin, a founder of Peace Now, who disclosed: "When I see the black-coated haredim with the children they spawn, I can understand the Holocaust."
And if these outpourings seem to be the products of deranged minds, let us not forget that even the impeccably liberal Tony Judt displays a striking indifference to the practical consequences of his proposals for the people of Israel. For Professor Judt, and for other advocates of the "one-state solution," it is perfectly acceptable to leave millions of Jews helpless before the armies and suicide bombers of the Middle East ("Things change"), just so long as faculty dinners and cocktail parties are no longer spoiled by the latest controversy over Israeli military tactics.
Such are the ideas exposed to the light of day in The Jewish Divide Over Israel. Our book's contributors – who range from left-wing supporters of Peace Now to right-wing advocates of peace through strength – are united around one principle: whatever their views on the future of Israel, they maintain that the Jewish homeland no more deserves to become a provisional country whose "right to exist" is the subject of legitimate discussion than the Jewish people deserve to be a pariah nation whose survival is conditional on the approval of anti-Semites.
In repudiating the Israel-haters in our ranks, we affirm not only our solidarity with embattled Israeli Jews, but also our own basic self-respect.
Apparently, self-loathing Jews are too busy berating Israel and Jews for defending themselves against "palestinians" to take much notice on how Muslims are reciting from the Koran to justify their murder of "infidels" all around the world.
Currently there are 30 conflicts around the world and 25 of them involve Muslims. If anything, that fact alone deconstructs all other mythologies - for example, "occupation" - as the root cause of Muslim terrorism.
It is time that self-loathing deficient Jews learned that real Jews reject the politics of leftwingers. We reject their views on immigration, culture, religion, ideology, law enforcement, and military strategy.
Self-loathing Jews do not take their proper place in the family of nations. Instead, they will be like hyena, scurrying off into the brush with their tails between their legs, because their apathy and self-loathing placed their fellow Jews into a dangerous, self-imposed ghetto, surrounded by 23 nations of Islamic theocracies and brutal dictatorships, run by racist madmen.
Ron Kuby, Daniel Barenboim, Deborah Fink, Adam Shapiro, George Soros, Stanley Cohen, "Rabbi" David Weiss, are just a sampling of self-loathing Jews especially when it comes to their acknowledgement and pride in being Jewish. Just Google each of them and read what each says about Israel and Jews.
Manfred Gerstenfeld at The Jewish Center for Public Affairs writes:
Anti-Jewish attacks on Israel by Jews are frequently indistinguishable from those by non-Jews. Among the specific aspects in the anti-Israel writings of some Jews are the use of their family's Holocaust experiences, their references to being Jewish, or an association of some kind with Israel. Assaults on Israel and Jews by non-Jews often use statements from Israeli or diaspora Jewish defamers as a legitimization. In order to fight verbal attacks against Israel by Jews more effectively, a much better understanding of their background, motives, and methods is required.Much of the Jewish world is ignorant of their precious heritage. The results are catastrophic: apathy, shame and self-loathing. If this is indeed a Jewish problem then the siege upon us will not be lifted until we as Jews acknowledge our rightful place in history and correct the mistakes we have made by denying them.

UN solidifies creation of 'Israel-bashing' council
A United Nations General Assembly committee on Friday furthered the transformation of the UN Human Rights Council from anything resembling a body concerned with global human rights to one that focuses solely on condemning the Jewish state.
By a vote of 167 to 7, UN Watch reported that the committee approved a package altering the procedural mechanisms of the Human Rights Council in the following ways:The Council will no longer retain or hear from country monitors or experts reporting specifically on rights abuses in Cuba or Belarus;
The remaining 10 country monitors, who report on abuses in countries such as Sudan and North Korea, are now in a "review process" pending the termination of their services;
New guidelines have been implemented that make it next to impossible to pass a resolution condemning any nation by name;
Israel is the exception to all the above rules, and is now under permanent indictment and will feature as a special agenda item any and every time the council meets.

Adalah, ICAHD, and Other Political NGOs Promoted in University of Denver GSIS / Hebrew University "Human Rights” Program
The Minerva Center for Human Rights, a program based at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is arranging a number of summer courses for advanced students at the prestigious Graduate School for International Studies at the University of Denver.[1]
While some of these courses include qualified academics and focus on serious research issues, others which offer internships are based on partisan political positions promoted by NGOs with no academic foundations. The “Internship with Israeli and Palestinian Human Rights Organizations” includes the participation of B'Tselem, Machsom Watch, ICAHD, and Adalah.
As documented in detail by NGO Monitor, officials from ICAHD frequently refer to Israel using terms such as “apartheid”, actively support academic boycotts, and participate in conferences and campaigns that promote a radical pro-Palestinian position. Seth Freedman of the Guardian (UK) wrote: “Jeff Halper, the man behind ICAHD, is a far more sinister figure in terms of the damage he does to the chances of rapprochement between the moderates in Israel and those on the Palestinian side of the divide. A supporter of the one-state solution - in other words, the total elimination of Israel in its current form - Halper travels the world promoting his message of ‘Israeli apartheid’ and calling for heavy sanctions to be implemented against the Jewish State.”
Similarly, Adalah is very active in anti-Israel activities in the United Nations, such as a July 2006 document sent to member states asking them to convene an emergency session to condemn Israel's construction of the security barrier. This submission, designed to promote sanctions and boycotts, erroneously refers to the ICJ advisory opinion as a "ruling" against the "wall" and omits any mention of the barrier's role in preventing terrorist attacks.
Machsom Watch is also a partisan political organization, openly declaring its positions and objectives, and many of its media reports and claims have been shown to be inaccurate, unverifiable or false. Claims that security measures “are employed by Israelis for the sole purpose of preventing the free passage of Palestinian residents between their villages and towns" absurdly erase the context of mass terror.
B’stelem, one of the most visible and powerful Israeli NGOs, (funded by European governments, Church groups and other sources), acknowledges its political objectives. Detailed analyses have shown that these objectives result in distorted reports, particularly regarding Palestinian casualties which fail to distinguish between civilians and those involved in terrorism. In response to a May 2007 publication co-authored by B’tselem, the Israeli Ministry of Justice (MOJ) issued a nine page letter detailing the questionable methodology and lack of verifiable sources. The letter notes that the report is “fraught with mistakes, groundless claims and inaccuracies.”
Such one-sided political campaigning by unaccountable private organizations based on false or unverifiable claims is antithetical to academic norms and standards of conduct.
Furthermore, the exploitation of the rhetoric of human rights to promote particular and discriminatory agendas[2] further degrades these important universal norms. NGO Monitor urges the heads of the Minerva Center, its funding organizations[3], the Hebrew University, and the University of Denver GSIS to appoint an independent committee to review this and similar activities.

Israel Held to Higher Standard than Other Nations
Israel is a tiny country less than half the size of Nova Scotia, much of which is uninhabitable. It is surrounded by neighbors who have constantly pledged its destruction since the day it came into being - well before there was any issue of the so-called "occupation" - and have often acted on that pledge. Israel has been the subject of a stream of condemnatory resolutions issued out of the UN and its various organizations, out of all proportion to anything it has ever been accused of - much of which is false, like the so-called "Jenin Massacre." Israel is governed by a democratically elected government consisting of representatives from all spheres of Israeli society - including Arabs. It is guided by Jewish values much in the same way that Canada, the U.S. and the UK are guided by Christian values. Arab citizens of Israel are full citizens of the state and have the right to vote, the right to free speech, the right to religious freedom, and the protection of the rule of law. Where does that exist anywhere else in the Middle East?

The "Israel Lobby" Myth
Israel is a free, democratic, open, and relentlessly self-analytical place. To hear harsh criticism of Israel's policies and leaders, listen to the Israelis. So questioning Israel for its actions is legitimate, but lies are something else.
The catalog of lies about Jews is long and astonishingly crude, matched only by the suffering that has followed their promulgation. Defaming the Jews by disputing their rightful place among the peoples of the world has been a long-running, well-documented, and disgraceful series of episodes across history. Again and again a time has come when legitimate criticism slips across an invisible line into what might be called the "badlands," a place where those who should be regarded as worthy adversaries in debate are turned into scapegoats, targets, all-purpose objects of blame.
In America, thousands of groups vie for influence. Among these are Jewish groups that have come under renewed criticism for being part of an all-powerful "Israel lobby," most notably in a book published last week by Profs. Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer. Jewish groups also largely agree that the United States should support Israel. But the notion that they have anything like a uniform agenda and that U.S. policy in Israel and the Middle East is the result of this influence is simply wrong.
Another tried and true method for damaging the well-being and security of the Jewish people and the State of Israel is a dangerously false analogy. Witness former President Jimmy Carter's book Palestine-Peace Not Apartheid. Here the association on the one hand is between Israel's existentially threatened position and the measures it has taken to protect its population from terrorist attacks, driven by an ideology bent on the complete eradication of the State of Israel, and, on the other, the racist oppression of South Africa's black population by the white Boer regime.
The United States supports Israel not because of favoritism based on political pressure or influence but because the American people, and their leaders, say that supporting Israel is politically sound and morally just.
Those who blame Israel and its Jewish supporters for U.S. policies they do not support are wrong. They are wrong because support for Israel is in our best interests. They are wrong because Israel and its supporters have the right to try to influence U.S. policy. And they are wrong because the U.S. government is responsible for the policies it adopts, not any other state or any of the myriad lobbies and groups that battle daily to win America's support.

Peres: Hamas Wants to Destroy Israel
President Shimon Peres told Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer on Monday in Jerusalem: "We had a rough day in Sderot. Seven rockets fell and almost killed our children. It's an intolerable situation and there is one address for it - Hamas. There is a limit to how much Israel is willing to tolerate....Israel left Gaza completely. There is not one Israeli citizen in its territory. Today I ask myself why? Why is Hamas shooting? What is its goal? There is only one answer. Hamas is a religious-fanatic organization that does not want a Palestinian state for its people, but wants to impose the dangerous radical religious hegemony that is taking over the entire Middle East and gives a green light to kill innocent people in its name." "Hamas has one goal," he said, "to destroy the State of Israel....While Israel is making great efforts to reach peace with the Palestinians, it has a greater duty to protect the lives of its citizens and its children. The terror must stop."

Confirmed: Arafat Died of AIDS
Rumors have long circulated in both Israel and the Palestinian Authority that Arafat’s symptoms prior to his death were caused by AIDS. Within the PA, Israel has always been accused of poisoning the PLO chairman.I wrote about Arafat and Pacepa's book, Red Horizons, in 2004. But no one wanted to discredit Arafat, the mass murderer. Neither his murderous campaigns against Jews nor his pledge to kill Israelis whenever he could, nor his massive theft of millions of dollars slated for the "poorpalestinianpeople" could discredit this beast. He was the Nobel Peace Prize winner after all, which made him fashionable; a horrific award bestowed upon a murderer and an award fundamentally invalid in every aspect, in a world that only knows how to blame Jews and Israel for everything and anything.
Now, Arafat’s private doctor has joined other PLO officials in acknowledging that Arafat had the HIV virus, but is holding on to the claim that Israel was responsible for his ultimate demise, in a French hospital.
Dr. Ashraf al-Kurdi told the Jordanian Amman News Agency that Arafat did, in fact, have AIDS – but insisted that the HIV virus was injected into the chairman’s bloodstream, and not the result of illicit sexual activity.
Al-Jazeera interrupted an interview with al-Kurdi due to his mention of Arafat’s having had AIDS.
French doctors who treated Arafat insisted after his death that he had died of a massive stroke after suffering intestinal inflammation, jaundice and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a blood condition.
Another Arafat aide, Bassam Abu Sharif, accused former French President Jacques Chirac of withholding knowledge that Israel killed Arafat with a substance that destroys red blood cells.
Even before Arafat died, US author and intelligence expert John Loftus said on the John Batchelor Show on WABC radio on October 26 that it was widely known in CIA circles that Arafat was dying from AIDS. Loftus further said that was the reason the US kept preventing Israel from killing Arafat – to allow him to be discredited by the ailment.
A 1987 book by Lt.-Gen. Ion Pacepa, the deputy chief of Romania's intelligence service under Communist dictator Nicola Ceausescu, may explain how Arafat contracted the sexually transmitted disease.
In his memoirs "Red Horizons," Pacepa relates a 1978 conversation with the general assigned to teach Arafat and the PLO techniques to deceive the West into granting the organization recognition. The general told him about Arafat’s nightly relations with his young male bodyguards and multiple partners. “Beginning with his teacher when he was a teen-ager and ending with his current bodyguards. After reading the report, I felt a compulsion to take a shower whenever I had been kissed by Arafat, or even just shaken his hand," Pacepa wrote.
Senior US intelligence official James J. Welsh, the National Security Agency's former PA analyst, told WorldNetDaily, "One of the things we looked for when we were intercepting Fatah communications were messages about Ashbal [Lion cub] members who would be called to Beirut from bases outside of Beirut. The Ashbal were often orphaned or abandoned boys who were brought into the organization, ostensibly to train for later entry into Fedayeen fighter units. Arafat always had several of these 13-15 year old boys in his entourage. We figured out that he would often recall several of these boys to Beirut just before he would leave for a trip outside Lebanon. It proved to be a good indicator of Arafat's travel plans. While Arafat did have a regular security detail, many of those thought to be security personnel - the teenage boys - were actually there for other purposes."
