Anti-Semitism at the University of California, Irvine

Muslims around the world conveniently forget that Israel is a prosperous and civilized nation founded by legal land purchases and predicated on international law. Muslims choose to ignore the fact that Israel is a legitimate and sovereign nation, voted imprimatur into sovereignty and legitimacy by the United Nations.

Regardless of the facts, empirical historical and archaelogical evidence that Jews have righteously returned to their indigenous homeland, Muslims at the University of California, Irvine, specifically the Muslim Student Union (MSU), a virulently anti-Semitic and anti-American student group, hold several programs which unabashedly support terrorist groups and unjustly denounce Israel, America, and the Western world. MSU events have featured speakers like Norman Finkelstein, Ward Churchill, Muhammad al-Asi and Amir Abdel Malik Ali, and have had titles such as "Hamas: the People's Choice" and "Israel: The 4th Reich."

Out of all the MSU’s speakers, al-Asi has the most lurid personal history. A former Air Force Officer, al-Asi became radicalized by the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and is an avid admirer of the late Ayatollah Khomeini. In 1983, he was removed from his position at the Islamic Center in Washington D.C. for being too radical, and since then, he preaches his hateful message in front of the very same mosque to passers-by. Al-Asi also makes regular trips to Iran to meet hard-line officials, and as reported by the Washington Post, is under constant surveillance from the United State’s government.

Over the past several years there have been a growing number of reports from Jewish and non Jewish students at The University of California, Irvine (UCI) alleging anti-Semitism on campus and biased treatment by certain University officials. These allegations are summarized as follows:

1. Jewish students have been subject to physical and verbal harassment because they are Jewish and support Israel;

2. Hate speech, both direct and symbolic, is directed at Jews by speakers and demonstrators;

3. An annual week-long event sponsored by the Muslim Student Union is an anti-Semitic hate fest targeting Israel and Jews using lies and propaganda dating back to the anti-Semitism of the Middle Ages;

4. Speakers who are pro-Israel and/or those who condemn speakers who espouse anti-American and anti-Israeli views are subject to disruptive behavior by Muslim students and their supporters;

5. Jewish students claim they are subject to a hostile class environment by faculty members who adopt an anti-Israel bias;

6. Materials contained in certain Middle-East Studies courses are biased and are indicative of a “leftist” orthodoxy that characterizes this area of study;

7. The UCI administration is not responsive to complaints by Jewish students.

8. Jewish students complain of a “double standard” when the administration enforces campus rules and regulations.

Muslims also conveniently forget that those who have the privilege of living in the United States enjoy rights of Freedom of Speech under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as further interpreted by the United States Supreme Court.

Any proscription of speech or an attempt to force anyone to stop speaking as they choose, even if it is hate speech, is unacceptable.

Presidents and Chancellors of public colleges and universities have an obligation to establish an environment for education at their institutions; that the values of that institution in the search for truth should represent the values of our democratic society such as tolerance for a diversity of opinions and beliefs and respect for the individual.

Education at colleges and universities takes place both within the classroom and outside the classroom.

Therefore, student affairs administrators and academic administrators are not bystanders to the education process.

Administrators are also democracy’s guardians of acceptable behavior in the academy. This includes ensuring civil discourse within the academy.

Administrators must aggressively condemn behaviors, including speech that threaten an individual’s well being, denigrate an individual’s ethnic, religious, or racial identity, or blame a religious or ethnic group for criminal activity.

Public colleges and universities are a public trust and therefore must be held accountable to the public through the Board of Regents and the campus administration.

Citizens can also hold institutions accountable by supporting or withholding support for the University either through direct contributions and/or through the support or nonsupport of public funding measures.

Although the university has the moral obligation to speak out against hateful speech directed at a portion of the student body, they have made it clear they are going to avoid commenting on the issue or ensuring a safe campus environment. At the very least, administrators need to uphold the rights of all students and make certain civil liberties are maintained rather than selectively enforcing regulations.

Wiesenthal Centre to Danish Prime Minister: Withdraw State Award To Holocaust Denier

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre has urged Denmark's Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, to void a monetary award by the Ministry of Culture's Arts Council (Kunst Raadet) to Erik Haaest, known as the "Holocaust Sceptic".

In his protest to PM Rasmussen, Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Wiesenthal Centre's Director for International Relations, wrote in part: "Haaest reportedly received this prize for his work on 'The Danish Friekorps on the Eastern Front 1941 1965', hardly a symbol of Danish National pride", adding, "Haaest's citations from Holocaust denial literature go back to the 1959 volume of the Journal of Historical Review published by theinstitute of the same name, frequented by neo-Nazis worldwide."

Dr. Samuels cited the culture section of DR Nyheder, which, under a photoof the gas chamber states, "Erik Haaest questions existence of gas chambers at Auschwitz KZ in Poland". Another publication reportsHaaest as declaring Anne Frank's diary "a swindle".

The Wiesenthal Centre's protest declared, "your government's award to Haaest violated the commitments of Denmark to the European Commission and to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. This act legitimizes (...) Holocaust denial, incitement to antisemitism and is an offence to Holocaust survivors and to the families of all victims of Nazism. Our Centre urges you to immediately withdraw this outrageous award, to investigate its circumstances and publicly dismiss those responsible."

Canada's top court snubs Holocaust denier Zundel

An extreme-right wing extremist who was deportedfrom Canada to face trial in Germany for spreading racist propaganda over the Internet was denied an audience with Canada’s top justices Thursday. The Supreme Court of Canada rejected Ernst Zundel’s appeal that he was unlawfully detained and deported from Canada in 2005, after being ruled a threat to national security because of his links to white supremacists and neo-Nazi groups. Zundel, 67, had sought 10 million Canadian dollars (around 6,5 million euros) in damages. In February, a German court convicted Zundel on 14 counts of incitement of racial hatred, causing offence, and disturbing thepeace of the dead by publishing and distributing anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi materials. He was sentenced to five years in prison -- the maximum sentence allowed under German law for denying the Holocaust.

Holocaust denier David Irving was shown on Italian television claiming there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz.

During a program that aired last Friday, Irving was shown at the former German Nazi death camp in Poland, which he apparently visited recently. During the Italian documentary, Irving explains that engineering techniques at the time weren't sufficient to allow the Nazis to gas people en masse.

A spokesman for the Auschwitz museum, Jaroslav Mensfelt, said Irving likely visited there a week or two ago, but without the knowledge or consent of museum officials.

"He is a persona non grata here,'' Mensfelt said. "It would be best if he never came here. Such people desecrate the place and are not welcome," he told The Associated Press.

Irving was released from jail in Vienna in December after serving 13 months of a three-year sentence for Holocaust denial. In an interview with Sky TG24 earlier this year, Irving said the Nazis did kill millions of Jews, but that mass killings did not take place at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Holocaust denier jailed for five years

A German court on Thursday convicted far-right activist Ernst Zundel of incitement for denying the Holocaust, and sentenced him to the maximum five years in prison.

The 67-year-old, who was deported from Canada in 2005, was convicted on 14 counts of incitement for years of anti-Semitic activities, including denying the Holocaust, a crime in Germany, in documents and on the Internet.

Zundel showed no emotion when Judge Ulrich Meinerzhagen read the verdict, only nodding occasionally.

Zundel and his supporters have argued that he was a peaceful campaigner being denied his right to free speech, and attorney Ludwig Bock immediately said he would appeal.

"What is notable is the iron-hard refusal of the court to allow consideration of new scientific findings or expert opinions," Bock said.

The trial against Zundel, who has also lived in the US state of Tennessee, began in November, after a first trial attempt collapsed in March over a dispute with one of his attorneys, Sylvia Stolz, who was banned from proceedings on the grounds that she was attempting sabotage by denouncing the court as a "tool of foreign domination."

In the current trial, Bock quoted from Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and from Nazi race laws in his closing statements last week as he argued for Zundel's acquittal.

Bock accused the Mannheim state court of not wanting to face a "scientific analysis" of the Holocaust, and charged that prosecutors, one of whom has termed Zundel a "rat catcher", had defamed his client.

Another of Zundel's five attorneys, Herbert Schaller, told the court that all evidence for the Holocaust was based only on witness reports, instead of hard facts.

In his own closing arguments, prosecutor Andreas Grossmann called Zundel a "political con man" from whom the German people must be protected, and quoted from his writings, which argue that millions of Jews did not die at the hands of the Nazis.

"You might as well argue that the sun rises in the west," Grossmann said when asking that Zundel be given the maximum sentence. "But you cannot change that the Holocaust has been proven."

"Ahmadinejad is using Holocaust denial as a concrete tool to pave the way for nuclear strikes," said Avner Shalev, director of Yad Vashem. In the two weeks after its Jan. 27 launch, more than 10,000 people logged on in Iran and hundreds of e-mails flooded in, thanking the museum for providing information that some Iranians found difficult, if not impossible, to access in their country.

In his opening speech to the conference, the Iranian foreign minister, Manucher Mottaki, left no doubt on this point: If "the official version of the Holocaust is called into question," Mottaki said, then "the nature and identity of Israel" must also be called into question. If it should turn out, however, that the Holocaust did happen after all, Ahmadinejad explains that it would have been a result of European policies, and any homeland for the Jews would belong not in Palestine but in Europe. Either way, the result is the same: Israel must vanish.

Iran challenges Europe to hand over Holocaust 'proof'

An Iranian government-sponsored body set up to probe the veracity of the Holocaust has challenged Europe to hand over documents about the mass slaughter of Jews in World War II. Mohammad Ali Ramin, the head of the "World Holocaust Foundation" created after Iran's controversial Holocaust conference last year, said Austria, Germany and Poland in particular should supply documents.

It is outrageous in the extreme that the world would accept a scheme that would permit Arabs to have an ethnically cleansed geographical region where no Jews can live, yet it is equally outrageous that Arabs can't believe that another region of the world already did accept a scheme to have an ethnically cleansed geographical region where no Jews could live.

The stupidity of Iran's leader is not surprising. As Steve at Hog On Ice once wrote, "I cannot understand how Iran came to be ruled by what appears to be a capuchin monkey."

Holocaust Memorials defiled by neo-Nazis

The German authorities were preparing for criticism from the Jewish community after it was revealed that a Holocaust memorial in Berlin was being used as a public lavatory by tourists and by neo-Nazi sympathisers.

The disclosure, in a Berlin newspaper, will trigger a new debate about how the Holocaust should be remembered in Germany. One argument against building the monument -- that consists of 2,700 concrete slabs resembling Jewish gravestones -- was that it would become a target of anti-Semitic vandals. The managers of the memorial, which attracts 3.5 million visitors a year, have tried to play down the scandal. 'This just belongs to the teething problems of any new monument", Uwe Neumaerker, of the Memorial Foundation, said.

The German Government has been aware of the problem since the monument was completed in May 2005 but has tried to maintain a silence for fear of encouraging more vandalism. The defacing of Jewish memorial areas in Germany by followers of the far Right has become a widespread problem that is acknowledged rarely. On the eve of Holocaust Day at the weekend a group of youths set fire to a restored railway carriage -- symbolising the deportation of the Jews -- in Lower Saxony.

In the eastern German port of Stralsund, concrete was poured over a memorial for a Jewish family, the Keibel-Cohns. A court in Frankfurt an der Oder, on the Polish border, sentenced three youths to between nine and 14 months jail this month for urinating on a Jewish memorial.

On the eve of this year’s International Day of Commemoration for Holocaust victims, the UN passed a resolution condemning any denial of the Holocaust. Specifically, the resolution “urges all member states unreservedly to reject any denial of the Holocaust as a historical event, either in full or in part, or any activities to this end." The US-introduced resolution did not specifically name Iran, even though Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sponsored a conference in December at which 67 Holocaust deniers questioned whether six million Jews were really exterminated by the Nazis.

German Ambassador Thomas Matussek commended the UN Resolution, saying distortions of historical facts “are a shameful failure of the responsibility we all share to ensure a world free from such atrocities.” Matussek was speaking on behalf of the European Union, whose nations have failed to live up to such a responsibility.

If the Holocaust is not yet being denied all across Europe, it is well on its way to becoming forgotten. Consider the case of the British town of Bolton in Manchester. Responding to Muslim pressure, last week the Bolton Council canceled its Holocaust Memorial Event. A Genocide Memorial Day in June will now take its place. While Bolton’s Interfaith Council was consulted before the decision was made, Rabbi Joseph Lever of the United Synagogue – a participant in the last three Holocaust Memorial Events in Bolton – was not.

US submits UN Resolution rejecting Holocaust Denial

The United States introduced a resolution to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, calling on member states "to reject any denial of the Holocaust as a historical event." Wire reports said the resolution notes that "ignoring the historical fact of these terrible events increased the risk they will be repeated." Although the resolution does not mention Iran by name, it follows a conference hosted by Tehran last month, questioning the veracity of the Holocaust and whether six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis during World War II. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called the Holocaust a "myth," has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map" and has suggested that a Jewish State be located in Europe, not the Middle East. The resolution condemning any denial of the Holocaust apparently is timed to coincide with International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Jan. 27.

Two years ago, the U.N. General Assembly held its first ever session on the Holocaust when it marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland and designated the date as an international day of remembrance for the Holocaust.

40 institutes boycott Iran think tank over Holocaust conference

Nearly 40 European and North American research institutes will suspend contacts with a leading Iranian think tank that helped organize last week's conference in Tehran of Holocaust deniers, a Paris-based researcher said Saturday. The institutes, from Warsaw to Washington and beyond, have agreed to suspend ongoing programs with the Iranian Institute for Political and International Studies, or IPIS, according to a statement issued by Francois Heisbourg, who organized the boycott. They have also refused participation in IPIS meetings or invite IPIS staff to their own forums and to decline travel to Iran sponsored by the Iranian institute.

Neturei Karta "Rabbi" claims Holocaust dead "deserved it"

A British rabbi who angered fellow Jews by speaking at a "Holocaust denial" conference in Iran now says millions did die in gas chambers but may have deserved it.

Ahron Cohen, an Orthodox Jew from Greater Manchester and a leading member of the anti-Zionist Neturei Karta movement, sparked new controversy on his return from Tehran by suggesting that God would have saved the victims of the Nazis if they had deserved to live.

Cohen, whose house in Salford was pelted with 1,000 eggs last year because of his extremist views, told The Sunday Times: There is no question that there was a Holocaust and gas chambers. There are too many eyewitnesses.

However, our approach is that when one suffers, the one who perpetrates the suffering is obviously guilty but he will never succeed if the victim did not deserve it in one way or another. We have to look within to improve and try to better ourselves and remove those characteristics or actions that may have been the cause of the success of the Holocaust.

Cohen's trip to Tehran along with four American rabbis from the same sect was paid for by the Iranian foreign ministry, which organised the conference entitled The Holocaust: A Global Vision. They were warmly greeted by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, and had two meetings with him.

Cohen ended his speech to the conference with a prayer that the underlying cause of strife and bloodshed in the Middle East, namely the state known as Israel, be totally and peacefully dissolved.

Incoming United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told Iran on Thursday it was unacceptable to deny that the Holocaust took place or to call for Israel to be wiped off the map.

Ban was responding to a question asked at a news conference about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who since coming to power in August last year has caused an outcry by terming the Holocaust a "myth" and calling Israel a "tumor" in the Middle East.

Ahmadinejad just ended a two-day international conference on the Holocaust that was dominated by speakers who questioned the extermination of 6 million Jews by the Nazis in World War Two.

U.S. Cardinal rips "Revisionist" history of Holocaust

Cardinal William Keeler says the U.S. bishops stand in solidarity with the universal Church in condemning "revisionist history" that seeks to minimize the horror of the Holocaust. The cardinal, who is episcopal moderator for Catholic-Jewish Relations for the U.S. bishops' conference, today issued a statement entitled "We Must Remember the Shoah."

When it comes to Holocaust denial and other untruths, remember this

Holocaust denial is being treated as a legitimate alternative viewpoint when in fact it is a falsification of history. When you're speaking about indisputable historical facts, there is no alternative. Holocaust denial is nothing more than hatred disguised as an interpretation of history.

See, without such hatred, Arabs, Muslims, [and yes, Christians] wouldn't be able to incite and commit acts of violence against Jews. Their goal is to delegitimize Jews, Judaism, and of course, Israel. One must re-define Jews as "cancers", "virus", "Christ-killers", "hook-nosed kikes", "rats", "demons", "baby-killers", etc. in order to hate them so that it is easier to kill them. Goebbels knew this well and so did the Germans and the rest of Europe who inhaled Hitler's euphoria when he spoke about Jews and Germany's pressing need to rid itself of them.

See, the Arab world’s grievance against Israel has little to do with territory and political authority. It has to do instead with the very existence of Jews living in the Middle East. For others, it has to do with the very existence that Jews exist at all. Why then, did Arabs murder 67 Jews while they were praying in a synagogue in their Jewish Holy City of Hebron in 1929?

The Holocaust denial conference held this week - and don't be mistaken - there have been several dozen held over the years - is just another sick-minded expression by Islamists, but it's not unusual. Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic feasts are typical fare in the Islamic diet.

Irwin Cotler writes "Let there be no doubt about it, those who would seek to deny the Jewish people their past are the same people who, if given the chance, would deny the Jewish people their future."

Folks, I ask of you - and what you must ask of your friends, co-workers, and acquaintances - is to learn the background and history of the Middle East and the essence of the political movement of Islam. When you hear that "international law" is always violated by Israel, but terrorist attacks and suicide bombings merit no mention, bring that hypocrisy up. When someone mentions that Iran is a democracy, remind them that it is not a democracy but an Islamic theocracy and that women are stoned in Iran. Bring that up. If you hear that Jews and Christians are not persecuted in the Middle East then remind them that Jews and Christians are forced to pay the jiziya tax as part of their subjugation.

With Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons, he can accomplish in one afternoon what it took Hitler six years to do: kill 6 million people. Moreso, everyone knows where Iran's nuclear weapons will be pointed, and everyone knows that if the button is ever pushed, it will be the end of Israel. And the end of Western civilization.

If you are exposed to ideas and comments that are patently untrue, such as the idea that the attacks on the 9/11 were justified or that they were America’s fault, or that Jews did it, then fight back. Only then can you verbally defend against terror and murder carried out in the name of Islam and help ensure the survival of Western civilization.

If you remain silent, then it would seem you prefer it that way. If I could, I would save your life. Would you try to save mine?
