A Hamas cell that was plotting suicide attacks inside Israel with chemical explosives was arrested in May by the Israel Security Agency and the IDF, security officials announced Tuesday. The cell was involved in manufacturing a bomb belt that was discovered in a Tel Aviv apartment on Yom Kippur, last September, and was designated for use in a suicide attack in the city. The IDF arrested four members of the cell, all residents of Nablus. One cell member, Ayman Awad, served a prison sentence in Israel for involvement in dispatching a suicide bomber several years ago. During their interrogation, the four confessed to building a laboratory where they experimented building bombs with different chemical materials, using an instructional video prepared by a senior Hamas bomb-maker.

The woman killed in the suicide bombing in Dimona on Monday has been identified as Lyubov Razdolskaya, 73. Rodolskaya's husband remains hospitalized in critical condition.

One step to the right was the difference between life and death for Rita Gofman, who survived Monday's suicide bombing in Dimona's commercial center. She had just passed the woman who was killed in the bombing.

"The only thing I see right now is the woman who died in front of my eyes, falling over and over," said Gofman, 28. "I didn't realize it was a terrorist attack. I felt as if I was a teddy bear thrown into space. I saw my legs in the air and a great yellow cloud that made my eyes burn," she said.

"Most [wounds] resulted from small iron balls that were placed inside the explosive belt," said Dr. Michael Sherf, director-general of Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, which treated 40 wounded.

The news about Monday's suicide bombing in the Israeli town of Dimona is that it's the first in more than a year. This didn't happen by accident, or because Palestinian radicals have somehow become less hostile to Israel. Responsibility was claimed by the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, which is affiliated with Mahmoud Abbas' ostensibly moderate Fatah party. Islamist Hamas remains even more ardently dedicated to Israel's destruction, a point it emphasizes with rocket barrages at southern Israeli cities close to Gaza.

Key to Israel's increasingly successful antiterrorist efforts has been the construction of its ostensibly "illegal" security fence, its equally "illegal" targeted assassinations of key terrorist leaders, its "disproportional" attacks on terrorist enclaves in Jenin and elsewhere, and other actions that saved innocent lives. As Israel put pressure on terrorist leaders, they were forced to spend their time running for their lives rather than planning the next attack. As Israel set up physical obstacles to terrorism, the need for large-scale military incursions declined, allowing a semblance of normal life to return for Israelis as well as Palestinians. Contrary to the conventional wisdom, Israel proved that terrorists can be defeated.

Pakistani Opposition Leader Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto Assassinated

Once again, we have more evidence of what Muslims do best - killing and maiming others. Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto , 54, was shot in the neck and chest at a campaign rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Thursday afternoon. A Muslim homicide bomber then blew himself up, killing at least 20 others. The death of the former prime minister threw the campaign for the Jan. 8 parliamentary elections into chaos and created fears of mass protests and violence across Pakistan, an important U.S. ally in the war on terrorism. Musharraf blamed terrorists for Bhutto's death and said he would redouble his efforts to fight them.

I'm sure Musharraf is not losing any sleep over her murder.

The Muslim attacker struck just minutes after Bhutto addressed thousands of supporters in the city of Rawalpindi, 8 miles south of Islamabad. She was shot in the neck and chest by the attacker, who then blew himself up, said Rehman Malik, Bhutto's security adviser.

While al Qaeda is considered by the U.S. to be a likely suspect in the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Banazir Bhutto, U.S. intelligence officials say they cannot confirm an initial claim of responsibility for the attack, supposedly from an al Qaeda leader in Afghanistan.

An obscure Italian Web site said Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, al Qaeda's commander in Afghanistan, told its reporter in a phone call, "We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahedeen."

It said the decision to assassinate Bhutto was made by al Qaeda's No. 2 leader, Ayman al Zawahri in October.

Iran must pay $2.65 billion to the families of the 241 U.S. service members killed in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, a federal judge declared Friday. U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth described his ruling as the largest-ever such judgment by an American court against another country. Iran has been blamed for supporting the militant group Hizbullah, which carried out the suicide bombing in Beirut. It was the worst terrorist act against U.S. targets until the Sep. 11, 2001 attacks.

Jewish Leaders Welcome Interpol Most-Wanted Notice in Argentine Bombing

Interpol has put five Iranians and a Lebanese man on its mostwanted list for the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. In Miami, VOA's Brian Wagner reports Jewish community leaders says the effort will pressure the Islamicgovernment to stop supporting terrorist activities. Delegates at Interpol's general assembly in Morocco approved theso-called "red notices" against the five Iranians and one Lebanese suspected in the attack. Argentine prosecutors are seeking Interpol's support in their probe into the bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires, which killed 85 people and wounded more than 200 others. Argentine officials allege Iran ordered the attack and had Hezbollah militants carry it out.
