The Shin Bet security service announced Saturday that it had apprehended a palestinian, a resident of the West Bank village of Kabatiya south of Jenin, who confessed to the stabbing death of an Italian tourist in Jerusalem last Thursday.
The suspect, linked with the Islamic Jihad organization, was arrested in a joint operation by the Shin Bet and Jerusalem police.
The foreign ministry in Rome has identified the victim as a 25-year-old Italian, Angelo Frammartino, who had travelled to Israel last week to do volunteer work on behalf of palestinians.
The victim was stabbed by a palestinian, the very group of people he had come to assist. He was stabbed while walking with three or four other tourists on Salah a-Din street in eastern Jerusalem. When they reached the Flower Gate to the Old City, the palestinian murderer stabbed Frammartino in the back, and then fled the scene.
Police officers who arrived at the scene found the knife and began searching for the palestinian perpetrator.
"An Arab youth approached a group of three or four tourists from behind and stabbed one man before fleeing," a police spokesman said. "He died of his wounds."

JERUSALEM, August 12, 2006 (WAFA - PLO news agency) -Palestinian NGO's in Jerusalem condemned Saturday the ruthless murder of an Italian volunteer in Sultan Suleiman Street in Jerusalem on August, 2006.
In a press release, palestinian NGO's in Jerusalem added that Angelo Frammartino, age 24, and his friends were walking towards the Old City, when he was attacked and stabbed by an unknown male assailant.
It added that "Angelo was part of a group of young Italian peace volunteers that since more than a week had been organising day-care activities with children in the Burj al Luqluq community centre in the Old City of Jerusalem."
"Nothing could describe our emotions for what happened. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Angelo, they have our deepest sympathy," Dyala Husseini of the Burj Al Luqluq community centre said.
The press release concluded that several palestinian NGO's will be organising a vigil in memory of Angelo and to show solidarity with his family and friends in Italy. The vigil will be organised in Jerusalem, on Sultan Suleiman Street, between Damascus Gate and Herod's gate, on Sunday, August 13, at 19h30.
Please note, the article neglects to state, that if Angelo were Jewish, no vigil would have been held in his memory.
