57 years ago, May 14, 1948, the fifth day of Iyar, Ben Gurion announced the founding of Israel. The population was one-ninth of what it is today. Arab armies were attacking Jewish cities, kibbutzim and towns. The Israel Defense Forces was equipped with patched-up, second-hand weaponry and planes. And when food supplies could break through the Arab sieges to feed the Jewish population, the supplies were thin.
