Amona Forum for Justice

From Mateh Maamatz, Jerusalem:

URGENT

For over 15 years, Mateh Maamatz has been the leading activist group in the settlement movement. Founded by Rabbi Yehuda Hazani, of blessed memory, it has organized most of the major demonstrations in Israel, often in cooperation with Moetzet Yesha, and often on it own, and has been a leader of political activism for the settlement movement in a long list of campaigns.

Certainly you have seen TV and Internet coverage of the pogrom at Amona last month. The pictures of police brutality against our wonderful young people speak for themselves.

Ehud Olmert is directly responsible for this pogrom, and this fact must be used to discredit him and weaken his party Kedima, in order to prevent them from destroying more settlements and surrender more of our land.

We are planning to begin a nationwide campaign that will last until the upcoming Israeli elections demanding that a National Public Inquiry be conducted to determine who gave the orders for the brutal behavior of the police at Amona.

Olmert is against such an Inquiry because he has something to hide.

During the night before the pogrom, all of the authorities, including the Attorney General agreed to a compromise to avoid violence, but Olmert wanted blood in order to win the support of the Left and to show that he is a strong leader like Sharon.

Unlike a Knesset inquiry which has no legal teeth, a National Public Inquiry has legal authority and could force Olmert to resign – just as a similar National Inquiry did to Sharon after the Lebanon War.

The demand for this National Public Inquiry will fill the streets of Israel and the media, through demonstrations, posters, the distribution of 500,000 videos CDs, newspaper ads, bus ads, billboards, a 30 second video of the pogrom that will be shown in cinemas before every screening, flyers distributed at major intersections, Internet saturation, and the like.

We will not let the photos and images of the awful police brutality disappear from the streets and from the public conscience. Including the constant reminder that Olmert is to blame.

Already, in reaction to the pogrom at Amona, the public support for Olmert and Kedima has weakened.

This campaign will cause more and more voters to leave Kedima and return to the Likud and more rightist parties. It will undermine Olmert’s leadership and cause in-fighting in Kedima which can topple the party. All of this will give us more of a chance to save the Land of Israel.

The campaign will also instill a new life and fighting spirit throughout the settlement movement which is in a crisis. Many people don’t want to vote at all or to take part in the struggle because they feel powerless. This campaign will give these people who are disgusted with Israel’s “democracy” a way to fight back in a democratic fashion.
